Julian Patrick Barnes born 19 January 1946 in Leicester in Central England.

From 1957 to 1964 he studied at the School of the city of London (eng. City of London School). After high school, Barnes goes to College "Magdalena", University of Oxford, faculty of modern Western European languages. In 1968 graduated from the University.

The first literary experiments began detective novels, which Barnes published under the pseudonym Dan Kavanagh. After several publications in literary anthologies - published his first novel, "Metroland" prize awarded by Somerset Maugham. The novel tells the story of a generation of rebels and nihilists of the 1960s.

The novel "the history of the world in 10 ½ chapters" (1989) was a real event in the literature. Written in the genre of dystopia, the novel looking for answers to some philosophical questions about the nature of man, his past, present and future.

Among the works by Barnes have short stories about love, for example "Before she met me", "How everything was" (Femina Prize, 1992), "Love"and so forth.

Barnes three times in her career got in the shortlist for the man Booker prize and became a laureate in 2011. He was married to his literary agent Pat Kavanagh, with whom they lived in North London. In October 2008 Pat died suddenly from cancer.
