He spent all the time there studying the works of leading European scientists in shemistry, metallurgy, mining znd mathematics. On his return to Russia in 1745 he was made a professor and was the first Russian scientist to become a member of the Academy of Sciences.

Через пять лет появился шанс поступления в Академию наук, так как не было достаточного количества благородных происхождения студентов, чтобы заполнить квоту. Его способности и трудолюбие привлекли к себе внимание профессоров и как один из трех лучших студентов он был отправлен за границу. Он провел все время там изучая труды ведущих европейских ученых в ее Мистри, металлургии, горнодобывающей ZND математики. По возвращении в Россию в 1745 году он стал профессором и первым русским ученым, чтобы стать членом Академии наук.
