Both in the US and England most children attend schools where education is free. In the USA they are called Public schools and in England they are called State school. Secondary education is optional in both countries but in the USA children must attend school between the age of 6 and 18 and in England between the ages 5 and 16. The period of primary education in England is 6 years. In the USA primary education is called elementary. It can take from 5 to 8 years in different types of school. The names of schools and the period of training there is quite different in these two countries. In the USA students do not take national exams at the end of each stage
